EMU AAUP Chapter Meeting March 14, 2005
1. President Howard Bunsis called the meeting to order in the Tower Room, McKenny Union, at 4:00 p.m. Debbie Silverman moved (Mike Brabec second) approval of the February 23, 2005 minutes. The motion passed with no objections or abstentions.
2. PRESIDENTIAL SEARCH DISCUSSION: John Fallon has been offered the position of President. Pitts accepted the position at IUPUI. Interviews with faculty had earlier indicated a unanimous preference for Pitts. We will plan a reception for Fallon.
3. DOMESTIC PARTNER BENEFITS UPDATE: We have contacted our attorney and made preliminary moves to support the AAPS case protecting domestic partner benefits. Howard will contact Bob Grovenor, director of the Michigan AAUP, to arrange for a statewide policy. Howard has also contacted the ACLU as have the EMU students.
4. HEALTH AND SAFETY ISSUES: We have three times requested meetings with the administration to discuss the inadequacy of facilities. Don Pearce suggested that we just need to submit requests for work orders. There followed a discussion concerning showing Fallon around campus. Mike Brabec pointed out that he is the AAUP representative on the Health and Safety Committee and should be contacted for issues relevant to that committee.
5. TASK FORCE UPDATES:
- HEALTH CARE. Howard reported that discussions are ongoing but unproductive.
- CE. No agreement yet but Don Pearson reported that things are moving along well. There was a discussion about how to capture more benefits from the off-campus sites.
- TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER. Brief discussion of ongoing meetings.
- STUDENT EVALUATION TASK FORCE. No report
- UNIVERSITY BUDGET COMMITTEES. The budget process seems confused with little match between budget and expenses.
6. MEETINGS WITH POLITICIANS AND ADMINISTRATORS: We have met with several state legislators. Howard has been invited to join Juanita Reed on a trip to Lansing.
7. LOCATION OF THE AAUP OFFICE. We are continuing to look for a new site that will better serve our membership.
8. OUTSOURCING. Howard has been meeting with the other unions to try to contain this problem.
9. GRIEVANCE REPORT. Beth Edwards will be grievance officer during the summer and fall semesters.
10. Treasurer’s Report: None.
11. Old Business: None.
12. New Business: None.
13. Adjournment: The Meeting adjourned 5:30 p.m.
