Qualifications for a University President

1. Experience in the classroom at the university level, since academics are central to EMU's mission.

 

2. A Ph.D. degree or an equivalent degree as one indicator of their ability to lead the academic mission.

 

3. A record of scholarly or creative achievement, to ensure an understanding of the importance of faculty and student research to the learning process, the university's reputation, and the greater community.

 

4. Track record of being a successful advocate for publicly financed higher education.

 

5. Demonstrated record of building positive relationships with key stakeholders and potential donors.

 

6. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, including race, ethnicity, disability, religious background, and sexual orientation.

 

7. Proven leadership qualities to create a university culture which is collaborative, innovative, transparent, and accountable.
