Eastern Michigan University now has a new president, Dr. Susan Martin.
This is an incredibly exciting time for EMU, as our new president is
remarkably capable and experienced. Most importantly, she is an
accomplished academic. The future of EMU is certainly in good hands.
The fact that EMU has its first women president is ground-breaking and
important. Given that fully 60% of our students are female, and given
that EMU has always prided itself on its commitment to diversity, it is
simply about time that EMU is being led by a woman.
In addition, Dr. Martin is an accounting professor whose area of
expertise is governmental and nonprofit accounting. This is especially
beneficial from my perspective (as you could imagine), but it will
benefit all of us, as our top leadership has been severely lacking in
financial expertise. That is no longer the case. However, it was clear
from the forums last week that Dr. Martin not only possesses financial
expertise, but also displays vision, enthusiasm and a sense of humor
(which is always helpful at EMU).
So please join me in congratulating Dr. Martin on her appointment. This
really is a special moment for EMU, and rest assured that the AAUP is
committed to working with Dr. Martin to make Eastern Michigan an even
greater university.
